Lake Vermilion Information Center

Lake Vermilion is a freshwater lake located in Northeastern Minnesota. It is one of Minnesota's finest lakes with 40,000 acres of water, 1,200+ miles of shoreline, and 365 islands. Lake Vermilion is the 5th largest lake in Minnesota that is fully enclosed in MN borders. It is known for its walleye and muskie fishing. The Ojibwe originally called the lake Onamuni, which means "Lake of the Sunset Glow". French fur traders translated this to the Latin word Vermilion, which is a red pigment. Lake Vermilion is located near the two small towns of Tower and Cook. Ely is also close by. The Vermilion Range was an area known for mining during the late 1800s and early to mid 1900s, and the Soudan Mine operated just south of the lake.

The lake attracts visitors from all parts of Minnesota and the Midwest. In fact, there are people who visit Lake Vermilion from all over the United States. Tourists are drawn by Lake Vermilion's reputation as a fishing destination, fine resort area, as well as its setting in the Northern Minnesota wilderness. The lake is surrounded by parts of the Superior National Forest and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).
